API and MCP server: quick answers

Automate transcription from your own code, or let your AI assistant transcribe files for you. Full documentation lives on the developers page; these are the answers people email us about.

How does the API work?

It is a REST API with exactly two endpoints: one POST to start a transcription and one GET to fetch the result. There is no SDK to install and nothing else to learn. Code examples are on the developers page.

Where do I get an API key?

Sign in and open Account → API. You can create and revoke keys there.

What is the MCP server?

A remote MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that gives AI assistants direct access to FileToText: your assistant can transcribe a file and use the text in the same conversation. Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, and Cline are supported. Setup instructions are at Account → MCP.

What does API and MCP access cost?

API and MCP access are included with any subscription; the free plan and one-off per-file purchases (which still cover the first 10 minutes of every file in the web app) do not include them. Transcription through the API draws from the same minutes as the web app, at the same prices: see how pricing works. Every purchase is backed by the same no-questions refund.

Building something bigger?

Past what the Business plan covers (100 hours a month), we quote one flat rate below what the plans would cost: get your price and pick API integration or MCP / AI agents as the use case so we have context before replying.
